What we do
We make scleral lenses of all kinds, but our main product is a range of gas permeable
(RGP) scleral lenses made to specification from our fitting system.
Products
Innovative Sclerals Ltd is dedicated solely to the development and manufacture of
scleral contact lenses (formally known as haptic lenses) and associated products
and services. The main material used is clear gas permeable plastic formulated exclusively
for Innovative Sclerals Ltd., which is 115Dk value measured by the 'Fatt' method.
Clear PMMA (acrylic) is also used, mainly for diagnostic fitting lenses. These lenses
are of the following types -
Standard Preformed RGP Scleral Lenses (lathe cut)
This is the main product, based on the 18 lens standard diagnostic scleral fitting
system designed by Ken Pullum. They are normally 23 to 24mm total diameter with
an optic diameter 10 to 12mm diameter. Lenses are normally made with the optic decentred
approximately 1mm to improve centricity on the eye. These lenses will suit the majority
of wearers for whom scleral lenses are indicated.
In addition a range of preformed 'Miniscleral' lenses have been successfully introduced which follow the same fitting principles as the standard range. These are 18mm total diameter with a co-axial optic zone. This range can be fitted both sealed and ventilated.
Other Preformed RGP Scleral Lenses
Lenses can be supplied which vary one or more of the parameters on which the standard
range is based - · Variation of limbal projection relative to apical projection
where required to improve corneal clearance · Variation of scleral radius · Variation
of lens diameter, including elliptical diameters · Variation of the decentration
· Variation of the lens thickness in the scleral zone for certain indications, including
heavy handling problems, and ptosis (Standard preformed lenses can, of course, incorporate
variations to diameter, decentration and thickness.)
RGP Lenses from Impression
Innovative Sclerals Ltd have developed methods to manufacture non-coaxial scleral
lenses in RGP. Thus it is now possible to accurately make scleral contact lenses
based on a cast ('impression') of the patient's eye. This brings full circle the
traditional method of fitting scleral lenses, but with the significant advantage
of using gas permeable material. These lenses are normally made following the fitting
of a final approved PMMA diagnostic lens.
PMMA Scleral Lenses
Scleral lenses made in PMMA can be made to both preformed and impression specifications,
as with RGP lenses. Nowadays they are made principally for diagnostic purposes,
but they may still have therapeutic and recreational applications.
PMMA/RGP Scleral Lenses
PMMA scleral lenses can be made with an RGP optic inserted. Traditionally these
have been used where only the 'impression' lens could be successfully fitted, but
enhanced oxygenation was required for wear time. They may also be suitable for wearers
who have handling difficulties.
PMMA Scleral Lens Diagnostic Fitting Sets
The standard fitting set manufactured by Innovative Sclerals Ltd has 9 lenses with
13.5mm scleral radius and 9 lenses with 14.5mm scleral radius. These two ranges
are designed with matching progressive apical/limbal clearances to suit most 'normal'
and keratoconic eyes likely to be encountered by the practitioner. The lenses are
powered within an appropriate range and are unfenestrated for sealed fitting. The
fitting set is boxed and supplied with a comprehensive fitting manual. Additional
lenses, to specifications outside the normal fitting parameters, can be supplied
individually as circumstances arise
Fenestration of Scleral Lenses
RGP scleral lenses manufactured by Innovative Sclerals Ltd are designed for sealed
fitting with no fenestrations. Occasionally fenestrations or channelling may be
required to improve the fitting; in such cases a purpose made PMMA should be tried
first to verify the fitting parameters. RGP material, by its nature, is prone to
breakage from fenestrations, so they are not normally recommended.
Lens Colour
All lenses are supplied clear, with no tints.
Lens optic specifications
The final power of lenses is normally determined from the power of the selected
diagnostic fitting lens together with any over-refraction and BVD allowance required.
Innovative Sclerals Ltd is unable to incorporate cylinder or toric into the lenses.
Supply of Products
Innovative Sclerals Ltd will only supply their products to qualified practitioners
and appropriate medical departments.
Training
Innovative Sclerals Ltd hold regular meetings in the UK. These provide practitioners
with theoretical and practical training, irrespective of their previous experience.
Other one off meetings can be arranged outside the UK as and when appropriate
