Insertion and Removal

Insertion and removal techniques are almost identical for practitioners and patients.

Insertion

Hold the lens horizontally and fill with unpreserved saline (practitioners add fluorescein if required).

lensfill

The patient should look down towards their nose then lift the upper lid up and slightly away from the surface of the eye.

lookdown

Slide the lens under the upper lid and upwards (towards the upper fornix).

ins2

Push the lens gently upwards (into the upper fornix) and hold it in this position.

ins3

Using the other hand bring the upper eyelid down so it covers the whole of the lens and secures it into the upper eyelid.

closelid

Keeping the upper lid held down over the lens, pull the lower lid down (using a tissue if necessary) until the lens pops into the lower eyelid. Gently release both lids.

Removal

Position: chin up and looking down. Lift the upper lid from the nasal side above edge of lens. Holding the edge of the eyelid, keep it close to the surface of the eye and draw it slowly across the top of the lens to break the suction.

rem1

The lens should pop forward and out.

rem3

If necessary, a sucker can be used instead:

  • Place the sucker onto a superior area of the lens
  • Gently push inwards then pull outwards and the lens should come out top edge first.
